Interview with Maui Design Team Finn & Jeffrey Spencer about the new Skybrid SLS:

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind the Skybrid SLS?

Finn: The idea for the Skybrid SLS comes from the desire to create a versatile Wing Foil board that bridges the gap between our dedicated Downwinder range and traditional compact Wing Foil board shapes. We wanted to design a board that offers the best of both worlds – efficiency and stability – to cater to a wide range of riding styles and conditions.

What makes the Skybrid SLS unique compared to other Wing Foil boards?

Jeffrey: The Skybrid SLS stands out due to its mid-length design, featuring a longer and narrower outline while maintaining a wider nose and tail. This combination results in incredible efficiency and exceptional stability. Constructed with our premium SLS technology, the board also includes longer carbon foil tracks, ensuring minimum weight and increased adjustability.

How does the design of the Skybrid SLS enhance performance for intermediate to advanced riders?

Finn:  We have focused on creating a board that allows for the earliest flight in light winds and easy take-off also with smaller, more efficient foils. The single concave to flat bottom shape aids in early planning and take-offs, while the raised front foot deck angle provides a playful and responsive feeling on the foil. The higher nose rocker helps prevent water catching and ensures smooth acceleration, making it ideal for intermediate to advanced riders.

Can you explain the benefits of the cut-outs in the tail and the beveled rails?

Jeffrey: The cut-outs in the tail are mainly for an early release of the water, which is crucial for quick take-offs. You benefit from the stability of the wider overall area in the tail when starting and floating around but have this effective planning area reduced once you gain forward momentum, reducing drag and enabling you to push the tail in easily for a quick take-off. The beveled rails make take-offs easier and provide more clearance through turns, enhancing the overall maneuverability of the board. These features contribute to a smoother and more responsive riding experience.

Is the Skybrid SLS suitable for both strapless and riding with footstraps?

Finn: Absolutely! The Skybrid SLS excels in performance when set up for strapless riding, offering freedom and flexibility for advanced maneuvers. However, it also includes the option for foot straps, providing added control for those seeking stability during high-speed runs and more aggressive turns.
